Orbelín Pineda’s European chapter may be nearing its end. As reported by ESPN, Greek club AEK Athens has reduced the Mexican midfielder’s release clause from $16 million to $8 million, opening the door for a potential transfer this summer. The move comes after Pineda refused to renew his contract, which currently runs through 2027, and amid the recent departure of coach Matías Almeyda.

Pineda has drawn interest from several Liga MX clubs. Tigres, Monterrey, and Toluca are reportedly leading the race to sign him ahead of the 2025 Apertura season, while Cruz Azul and Club América are also monitoring the situation. Chivas, however, has ruled out a move due to financial constraints.

Since joining AEK in 2022, the former Cruz Azul star has made 124 appearances, scoring 15 goals and providing 12 assists. He helped the club win the Greek Super League, a Greek Cup, and was named the league’s Player of the Year.

No formal bids have been submitted yet, but AEK appears ready to negotiate during the upcoming transfer window. With his price lowered and several suitors lined up, Pineda’s return to Mexican football seems increasingly likely.
